Have you ever thought about how easy it would be for someone to break into your home? We are approaching a time of year when house break-ins are common, so let’s look at some ways you can make your property as unappealing to a burglar as possible.

An intruder will want to enter and exit the home without being noticed. If you have any windows and doors hidden behind shrubbery and foliage, this will make a perfect place for an intruder to shelter behind while they break in. Trimming back this foliage and exposing entry points will act as a deterrent. You should also keep in mind that it is much easier to break in through doors or windows that are in poor condition, so you may need to check for signs of rot or warping, etc.

Lighting up the exterior of the house is another way to deter a burglar. Place motion sensor lights on every side of the home so that you will be alerted to any movement outside. It is also a good idea to leave several lights on inside the house, especially if you are going to be away overnight.

Some homeowners choose to install window bars or heavy-duty wire screens on windows of the ground floor. This can prove to be an effective intruder deterrent; however, window bars can also present a fire hazard. So, if you are thinking about window bars for your home, make sure that they are equipped with a quick-release mechanism.
