Window bars are used in many parts of the world as a way of protecting a building from would-be intruders. While they work well at preventing someone from breaking into a house through the window, one question we should ask is, are they a safe option for the occupants of the home?

When might window bars become a safety hazard? The risk of fire is ever present in a home which is why it is important to take every fire prevention measure possible. In a fire, it is crucial to have as many ways to exit the home as possible, and windows are often one of the main sources of escape. If those windows have security bars on them, it will not be possible to use them as an emergency exit and could seriously endanger the occupants of the home. They will also make it harder for firefighters to enter the home.

If you decide to add window bars to your home, there are some ways you can make them safer. For example, only install them where needed, such as on the ground floor level windows. You should also make sure that they come with a quick release mechanism so that anyone inside the home can escape in an emergency.
