Keeping household expenses down is a real challenge these days, especially if you’ve already done everything you can think of to cut costs. One major household expense is electricity. We know that electricity is essential to the running of a house, but is there anything we can do to reduce our electricity consumption and lower our bills? Here are some simple suggestions:

Keep the computer turned off when you are not using it. If you cannot do this, then try to at least switch off the monitor. If you have the choice between a desktop computer or a laptop, try to use the laptop as it consumes a lot less electricity than the desktop computer.

Do you have any old appliances or electronics that need replacing? When the time comes to buy new ones, make sure they are ENERGY STAR rated, as this helps to reduce energy consumption.

We often leave our laptops and cell phone chargers plugged in when they are not in use. But were you aware that they are still using electricity? So, after charging your devices, you may want to unplug the charger.

Take note of the position of your refrigerator. A refrigerator or freezer will use a lot more energy if they are situated close to the stove, dishwasher, or heat vent. If they are in direct sunlight this will also affect their energy efficiency.

These are just a few very simple ways to lower household electricity consumption. Remember that every little bit counts when it comes to cutting costs.
